Optimize your subject line with these tips

We no longer have to explain the power of a catchy subject line. If that first element of your email campaign doesn’t succeed to draw the attention of your contact, it’s end of story for your campaign. With these three elements you get the most out of your subject line every time.

The subject line seems like a mythical creature in the email marketing world. E-marketeers know very well how much depends on that one little line of text. The success of your campaign is determined by the first 50 characters.

What do you mean?

Make it worth their while! Some email marketings spend hours thinking of one single word that can summarize their entire email, or they’re looking for a seductive title, that just wants to entice instead of promoting the content of the newsletter. That’s a danger. Because if the link between the title and the content isn’t immediately clear for your contact, he’ll feel cheated on and will drop out.

Simple

At the moment an important motto of marketers that goes around for years, gets completely overlooked. Keep it short and simple (KISS) also applies to a subject line. Think about these three elements every time you’re composing a subject line:

1. Make a valuable offer or proposal

2. Use key words for your target audience (what are their needs, concerns,…)

3. Add an impulse to speed up the opening, for example by adding a deadline

Imagine for example that you’re sending a mailing in which you want to ask your contacts to complete their profile . The subject line could look like this:

“Complete your profile today for more relevant content and win a tablet”

In this situation the key words are “relevant content”, the offer is the tablet and the impulse is “today”. Would you click?
